The Abortion Pill

What Are Your Options?

If you are considering a chemical abortion, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with the available options and resources. Although our clinic does not provide or refer for abortions, we will provide the information you need to get your questions answered.

The first step in the process should be a medical exam, which varies based on your abortion provider. It should include a medical history assessment, followed by an evaluation from your provider. These steps are necessary to ensure that the abortion procedure is safe and appropriate for you. If your provider is not taking these steps for your health and well-being, you need to reconsider your healthcare options.

Your abortion provider should provide you with a comprehensive guide that outlines the medication and termination process. We offer free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and options counseling as the first steps before you take the abortion pill. Contact us today.

How much does the abortion pill cost?

The price of the abortion pill (typically a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol) varies based on location, provider, and whether insurance or financial assistance is involved. Here’s a general breakdown:

Costs range from $300 to $800 without insurance. Some clinics offer sliding scales or financial assistance for those who qualify.
Insurance: Many insurance plans, including Medicaid in some states, cover part or all of the cost. However, coverage varies significantly depending on the state.
Telemedicine Services: Telemedicine abortion services (available in some states) may have lower fees, often in the range of $150 to $600.
Prices may also include a consultation fee, any necessary follow-up, or additional care if complications arise.

Can The Abortion Pill Be Shipped?

It's understandable that you may have questions about how to obtain the abortion pill and whether it's possible to have it shipped directly to your home. It's also important to be aware of the laws in your area, as some places have strict regulations against shipping the abortion pill in the mail.

If you are considering getting the abortion pill, you will need to complete an online doctor's visit, also known as a telehealth appointment. During this appointment, a medical professional will assess your health and provide you with information about the abortion pill.

It's worth noting that the FDA does not recommend purchasing abortion pills online due to safety concerns. (1)

We understand that this can be a difficult time for you, and we have a team of caring and trained staff who are available to speak with you about your specific situation. Please don't hesitate to contact us today.

What's the process? How does the abortion pill work?

Step 1: Mifepristone

The abortion pill blocks progesterone, which is necessary for the uterus to support a pregnancy. This causes the embryo to stop developing and the uterine lining to break down.

However, if you change your mind and want to continue the pregnancy, the effects of the abortion pill may be reversed with the Abortion Pill Reversal protocol. Call us to learn more.

Step 2: Misoprostol

Misoprostol helps the uterus to contract and expel the embryo, embryonic sac, and lining, which leads to the developing pregnancy passing through your vagina. This process can take up to 48 hours and may cause heavy bleeding, strong cramps, and other symptoms.

Step 3: Follow-Up

You will need to return to the clinic for a follow-up exam 2 weeks after taking Misoprostol to confirm whether or not the chemical abortion was fully successful. If you worked with a telehealth provider, contact your provider to find out about standard follow-up practices.

This is a very important step because if the abortion was not fully complete, any parts left behind could cause an infection and have permanent effects.

What are the risks and side effects of the abortion pill?

Like any medical procedure, there are definitely risks with the abortion pill. Incomplete abortion is a risk, which could lead to a second procedure with additional side effects.

Risks and Side Effects of a Chemical Abortion

Allergic Reaction

Infection

Blood Clots

Heavy Bleeding

Severe reactions to the medication could be fatal. An infection or ectopic pregnancy may be severe enough to be life-threatening. The abortion pill does not treat an ectopic pregnancy.

It is crucial that you contact a medical professional if you experience any of the following symptoms:

Excessive bleeding that fills up more than 2 pads within 1 hour and occurs for 2 hours or more

Blood clots that occur for 2 hours or more

What’s a self-managed abortion?

A “self-managed abortion” (which some people call an “at-home abortion”) is when someone finds and takes abortion pills to end a pregnancy without the help of a doctor or nurse. If you are considering a self-managed abortion, it's important to remember that there may be legal risks to buying and using abortion pills outside of the health care system. Please contact us today to discuss your options if you are considering a self-managed abortion.

How effective is the abortion pill?

The rate of failure is between 2% and 8% (2). Successful termination is more likely if you are in the early stages of your pregnancy. Even though it can be dangerous to take abortion medications later in pregnancy or outside of the intended approval period, you have time to make this very important decision.
